Who is George Soros?
George Soros, a Hungarian American businessman and philanthropist with a net wealth of $8.6 Billion as of March 20, 2021. According to some sources, he has donated more than $32 billion to Open Society Foundations. This makes him the “most generous donor” in terms percentage of net wealth.
Soros, who survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary, moved to the UK and studied philosophy at London School of Economics in 1947. He started his career as a merchant banker before establishing his first hedge funds, Double Eagle in 1969.
Profits from the first hedge fund were used to start his Quantum Fund. This fund had assets of $25 billion under management in 2011. Soros earned a $1 billion profit by shorting US$10 Billion worth of pound sterling during the Black Wednesday UK currency crises in 1992. He was nicknamed “The Man who Broke the Bank of England” for his actions.
His early studies in philosophy led him to develop the General Theory of Reflexivity, which he applied to capital markets. This theory provides insights into asset bubbles, fundamental/market values of securities and value discrepancies that can be used for swapping and shorting stocks.
Soros, a liberal and progressive political supporter, donates to philanthropic efforts through the Open Society Foundations. Between 1979 and 2011, he donated over $11 billion. By 2017, he had given $12 billion to civil initiatives around the globe, including reducing poverty and increasing transparency.
He was instrumental in the fall of communism throughout Eastern Europe. His Hungarian home town’s Central European University received one of Europe’s largest endowments for higher education.
