The mother of a 6-year-old girl has been charged with criminal mistreatment and manslaughter for more than nine months after her daughter died from malnutrition.
Charlie Nowland, a young woman from Adelaide’s northern suburbs, was found unconscious in the early morning hours of the 15th of July 2022 in her family home.
Crystal Nowland, along with a charge of manslaughter, was also charged with four counts of criminal negligence in relation to the alleged abuse and neglect of four of her kids, ranging in age from 8 to 14.

The police conducted a thorough investigation, but no charges were filed against the mother until Wednesday morning when the investigators forced her to leave her home.

Two more South Australian parents were arrested in addition to Crystal Nowland following an unprecedented investigation into allegations involving child abuse.
Makai Waneen, a seven-year old child was also taken to hospital in February 2022 in a critical condition.
The boy was taken to Adelaide’s Lyell MacEwin Hospital and then transferred to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital where he died the next day.
A post-mortem revealed that the seven-year old died due to “multiple serious health problems”. Shane Wangannen was arrested and charged in connection with the alleged murder of his son Makai.Shane Wangannen failed to look after his son Makai Wanganeen, and as a result he died.
In October 2018, another child, Jasmine Wilmott (15), died. Her mother Jenni Wilmott has been charged with manslaughter for that incident.
Jenni Wilmott was cleared of criminal neglect charges in 2021, despite the fact that they were brought in 2020. The police have detained Wilmott again after obtaining more evidence.
