Who is Paul O’Grady?
Paul James O’Grady, MBE DL was born in 1955 on June 14th and died on March 28th 2023. He was an English multi-talented personality who worked as a comedian and broadcaster. He also wrote, acted, and performed as a drag queen. In the 1980s, he gained fame in the London gay scene by performing under his drag alter-ego Lily Savage. He then gained wider recognition in 1990s.
O’Grady, who was born to a working-class Irish migrant family in Tranmere, Cheshire, abandoned her Lily Savage persona during the 2000s and began hosting several radio and television programs, such as The Paul O’Grady Show. Paul O’Grady was born in Tranmere to an Irish immigrant working class family. He moved to London in late 1970s and began his career as a peripatetic social worker for Camden Council.
In 1978, he created his drag act, taking inspiration from female relatives. He then joined the Playgirls to tour England, a drag mime pair. O’Grady became mainstream recognized after he was nominated for a 1992 Perrier Award. He appeared on TV, radio and stage productions.
Cause of death for Paul O’Grady
It has been confirmed that Paul O’Grady died unexpectedly, at age 67. According to the death certificate, the Kent-based entertainer died of sudden arrhythmia. Paul O’Grady’s sudden death may be linked to ischemic heart diseases. After his death, the presenter was flooded with tributes for his passion for animals and his advocacy.
Andre Portasio, Paul’s partner, says: “It was with great sadness that i inform you that Paul passed away peacefully and unexpectedly yesterday evening. In this time of grief, we ask that you respect our privacy while you celebrate Paul’s life. His loved ones, his friends, his family, his animals, and those who appreciated his wit, compassion, and humour will miss him greatly. “I know he would have wanted me to say thank you for the love that you showed him over the years.”
He told a reporter in 2015 that, despite his wealth, he identified himself as working class and was constantly worried about paying rent.
He was raised as a Roman Catholic but revealed in his autobiography he “grew out of Catholicism”, following the death of his mother. However, he remained fascinated by alternative religions such as Wicca. He claimed to have seen unidentified lights over his home in Kent, and speculated he was being watched by extraterrestrials.

With a heavy heart, we learn that Paul O’Grady died from sudden arrhythmia. According to the British Heart Foundation, sudden arrhythmic deaths syndrome (SADS) is an unexpected death that results from a cardiac arrest without any obvious cause. Paul had openly discussed his heart disease, and he suffered three heart attacks prior to the age 65. His fans are shocked by the news.

In 2005, Liverpool John Moores University awarded O’Grady a fellowship honoris causa for his contribution to the entertainment industry, while De Montfort University, Leicester, conferred an honorary Doctor of Arts on him in 2010 for his outstanding achievements in television and radio.
