Allen became the Night Extra presenter at LBC when UBN stopped operating in 1979. The Night is Young was his next show on the station. Allen was the host of “London Talkback Radio”, later known as LBC London News 1152, and Saturday Night Out, when LBC split up into two stations: 1152 AM, and 97.3FM. Allen also worked at Blue Danube Radio, an Austrian station sponsored by United Nations.
Allen was well known as the host of LBC’s early morning show, which aired from Monday to Saturday between 4am and 7am. On February 24, 2023 he announced that he was leaving LBC. His last show aired February 17, 2023. Allen pre-recorded a second program called “Steve Allen In Conversation” for LBC, with the final episode airing spring 2020.
Allen was awarded the Gold Award for his contribution at the 2016 Arqiva Radio Commercial Awards. In a Radio Times poll, he was voted by readers as the 10th favorite male voice in radio that year.
