Lidia and her entire family fled to Trieste in Italy due to the political climate and the exodus of Istrians and Dalmatians.
Initially, they claimed that they were visiting Lidia’s aunt Nina who was a personal cook. Lidia, Franco and her mother fled first. Her father joined them later after they crossed the border to Italy in the night. Their stay in Trieste, however, was only temporary. They eventually became refugees in Risiera Di San Sabba. They remained in the camp despite their employment. Their application to be displaced persons, which allowed them to immigrate into the United States, was approved after two years.
