It is hard to imagine the extent of physical abuse inflicted on Baby Brianna. Her innocent body suffered unimaginable abuse including two skull fractures, multiple broken ribs and legs, as well as an arm. Her injuries are a stark reminder of the pain she suffered during her brief time on earth.
The curiosity surrounding Brianna’s story is a result of a desire to know how such horrific acts could have been committed against an innocent child. This story raises serious questions about human cruelty and the consequences of abuse and neglect.

Brianna Lopez Parents
Stephanie Lopez and Andy Walters were the parents of Brianna Lopez. Brianna Lopez’s life took an unfortunate turn when she entered her parents’ trailer. She was not greeted by love or care but with screams, punches and kicks. The people meant to protect her were the ones who abused her. Stephanie, Brianna’s mother, ignored her cries, while Andy and Steven – her father and her uncle – found joy in her suffering.
The cruelty Brianna suffered was horrifying. Stephanie would bite and pinch her in response to her cries, adding to the suffering of Brianna. Andy and Steven performed a shocking “game” on Brianna in a sadistic display. They would then throw her up in the air and cause her to crash into the ceiling before letting her fall to the ground.
Stephanie heard Brianna crying the morning before she died, but hesitated to call for an ambulance. Andy took advantage during this time and sexually assaulted Brianna as he changed her diaper. Brianna was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition after someone called an ambulance.
When authorities briefed on Brianna’s condition, the heartbreaking nature her injuries became apparent. Amy Orlando, Deputy Secretary for the Department of Public Safety revealed the shocking truth. “There was no part of her body which wasn’t bruised…” It was pure hatred and abuse that lasted all night and, as we later learned, for most of her adult life.
Andy and Steven acknowledged their involvement in the throwing of Brianna but denied the allegations of sexual abuse. Walters, a defendant, went so far as to say that there would be no evidence of abuse. He proposed a false scenario in which a dirty diaper was changed while a penetration occurred.
Stephanie, Andy and Steven were charged with criminal sexual penetration, child abuse that resulted in death, and other charges. The courtroom was full of sadness as it seemed that the defendants were being supported. Brianna’s grave was surrounded by a cage to stop people leaving flowers or balloons. This was a painful reminder of all the pain Brianna endured during her lifetime.

Is Stephanie Lopez Released?
Stephanie Lopez, who had served 493 days in anticipation of trial, was released by the Department of Corrections early on September 16, 2016. The Department of Corrections granted her early release based on the fact that she was eligible for “good-time” credit. Stephanie started her parole in Texas after her release.
Susana Martinez, who prosecuted Stephanie in this case, objected to her release. Martinez voiced her concern, saying that Brianna had been killed by men who tortured and raped Brianna, while her mother was not present during these tragic events. Martinez was adamant that Stephanie shouldn’t be allowed on the streets of New Mexico or anywhere else.
Orlando-Antonio Carrillo Jimenez, the spokesperson for the Baby Brianna Foundation, has also expressed opposition to Stephanie’s freedom. He said that no amount prison time or punishment would ever be enough to make up for the crimes committed against Baby Brianna.
Maria Perez spent time in prison with Stephanie Lopez and described her as quiet, with few conflicts. Perez said that Stephanie Lopez would sometimes ask for prayers and express her belief that God loved her despite past actions. Perez hoped that Stephanie would undergo an inner transformation, become the best version she could be, and seek to repent.
Andy and Steven Lopez remain in prison. Walters who was sentenced for 63 years may be eligible for good-time and not have to serve the entire sentence.
