Who is Kristin S. Smart?
Kristin Smart was born February 20, 1977. She was an American woman who tragically lost her life to Paul Flores in her first year at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). Kristin Denise Smart was declared legally deceased on May 25,2002.
Kristin vanished on May 25, 1996. She was at a party off-campus hosted by another Cal Poly Student. Around 2 am, two students offered to help her get back to her dorm after she was found unconscious on the lawn of a neighbor.
Paul Flores joined the group, and assured everyone that he was going to safely accompany Kristin home. Kristin never returned to her dorm and, despite extensive searches over the years, no evidence has been found regarding her location.
Kristin’s disappearance was a major event that led to the passing of the Kristin Smart Campus Security Act. This law requires that all California public colleges and educational institutions funded by the state establish agreements between security services and police departments. These agreements are especially important in cases of violence against students and those who disappear.
On April 13, 2021 both Paul Flores (and his father Ruben Flores) were arrested on suspicion of being involved in Kristin’s disappearance.
Paul’s house was searched again and several items were found. The trial began in July 2022 and culminated in Paul Flores’ conviction for the murder of Kristin on October 18, 2022.
Ruben Flores, however, was cleared of the charge that he had been an accessory to the crime. Paul Flores received a sentence of 25 years up to life imprisonment on March 10, 2023. The Monterey County Superior Court in Salinas, California held the trial proceedings.

The evidence at trial strongly suggests that Flores sexually assaulted her and then killed her in the dorm. The prosecutors presented evidence that four cadaver canines detected a scent of decomposition in Flores’ bed.
Smart’s corpse was disposed in some way, and authorities thought they were closer to finding it by 2021. A search warrant was executed on the home of Ruben Flees, Paul’s father.
Investigators excavated a section beneath the rear deck of 710 White Court, in Arroyo Grande. The campus of Cal Poly is about 20 minutes away. The prosecutors claimed to have found a disturbance about the size of a body and traces of blood on the soil.
Paul Flores is the only person who knows where Smart’s body was buried. He has been largely uncooperative since 1996, when he first spoke to law enforcement.
Flores will be sentenced to prison on December 9. However, he could choose to appeal his decision. This would result in additional years of court proceedings. Flores is unlikely to reveal the location of Smart’s remains if he believes that there is a possibility of his release on appeal.
In some cases, prosecutors have exchanged information with convicted killers in return for reduced sentences. Kristin’s loved ones, along with law enforcement officials, continue to search for information about her whereabouts. They hope that her remains can be recovered and buried in a suitable place.

The phone rang soon after again. This time, it was the Cal Poly Campus Police on the other end. The Cal Poly campus police broke the news to Kristin’s father that she was missing and hadn’t been seen in several days. Kristin’s father, full of hope, ran to the campus in anticipation that she would be back by the time he got there. Kristin was not present, and this hope was dashed.
The following Tuesday an official report of missing persons was filed. This heightened concerns and sparked discussions among the campus community regarding the disappearance, especially the events surrounding the off-campus party.
The passage of time is painful for the Smart family. It has been more than 25 year since their daughter disappeared. A recent development in the case has led to the conviction and arrest of Kristin’s killer. This is a small measure of justice.
