We mourn with a heavy heart the sudden death of Superior Court judge Lisa Thornton. She was a respected figure in the legal profession. Judge Thornton was tragically killed at the age of 59 while traveling between New Jersey & Florida. Her sudden departure has left an emptiness in the hearts and minds of all who knew her, as well as those who admired her career.
In 2008, Governor Jon Corzine recognized the exceptional legal expertise of Judge Thornton and nominated to the bench. She earned respect and admiration as a jurist with great wisdom and integrity over the course of her 15-year tenure. After Lawrence Lawson retired in 2014, Judge Thornton was appointed as assignment judge. This further cemented her reputation within the legal community.
Before her judicial career, Judge Thornton held notable positions as an associate counsel for Governor Corzine, and as chief of staff for esteemed Attorneys General Stuart Rabner and Anne Milgram. In every endeavor she took on, her exceptional legal knowledge and commitment to public service was evident.

Then-Mayor Michael Beson appointed her to this position. She also served as special deputy commissioner of Department of Banking and Insurance under Governor James E. McGreevey.
