Stockton Rush: Who Was He?
Stockton Rush was born Richard Stockton Rush III. He was an American businessman who is best known as the CEO and co-founder of OceanGate. This company specializes in deep-sea research. Rush, along with his four companions, tragically lost their lives on June 18, 2023 during an expedition aboard OceanGate’s submersible Titan. The mission was to explore the Titanic wreckage in the North Atlantic.
Rush was born into a wealthy family in San Francisco. Stockton Rush is the youngest child of Richard Stockton Rush, Jr., a Philadelphia native, and Ellen Rush, a San Francisco resident. His maternal grandfather, Ralph K. Davies was also his grandmother Louise Davies. She was a well-known philanthropist and was known as the Louise M.
Davies Symphony Hall is named in her honor. Rush’s father had ancestral connections to Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton, two signers of The Declaration of Independence.
Rush had dreams of becoming an astronaut, and the first person on Mars. Rush showed a strong interest in aquatic and aviation activities. He began scuba-diving at the age 12 and obtained a commercial pilot license at the age 18. He was told that due to his poor vision, he would not be able to pursue a career in the military.
His passion for aviation never diminished. At the age of 19, he earned a DC-8 type/captain’s rating from United Airlines Jet Training Institute.
Rush’s education began in Phillips Exeter Academy where he graduated with honors in 1980. He then pursued an aerospace engineering degree at Princeton University and completed his studies there in 1984. In 1989, he expanded his knowledge by earning a Master of Business Administration at the University of California Berkeley.
